By moving away from the restrictive label of "polycystic ovaries," the medical establishment is finally acknowledging that the condition is not merely a gynecological anomaly, but a complex, multisystemic endocrine and metabolic disorder.


The Chronology of a Name: A History of Misclassification

The journey to renaming the syndrome has been as convoluted as the condition itself. Historically, the medical literature has struggled to pin down a label that accurately captured the breadth of symptoms associated with the disorder. Over the last century, the condition has been referred to by various names, including:

  • Hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation
  • Ovarian dysmetabolic syndrome
  • Sclerotic polycystic ovary syndrome

These shifting titles reflect the confusion that has plagued clinicians since the condition was first described. The transition to PMOS holds particular significance for the hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) community. The overlap between hEDS/HSD and PMOS is significant, with recent studies highlighting that these conditions frequently co-occur.

For those with hEDS, the diagnostic journey is often plagued by systemic failures and a lack of provider knowledge. The average diagnostic delay for hEDS—estimated at 22 years—mirrors the frustration felt by those who spent years fighting for a diagnosis under the old "PCOS" label.

Both PMOS and conditions like endometriosis appear more frequently in the hypermobile population.
