We check our sleep scores, heart rate variability, and step counts before we have even had a sip of coffee.
On the surface, this constant stream of on-demand information feels like the pinnacle of modern convenience. We are more "connected" than any generation in human history. Yet, the data tells a starkly different story: we are less happy, more anxious, and increasingly overwhelmed by the very tools designed to optimize our existence. As we move deeper into the era of the "measure me" movement, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. The health tech industry, while well-intentioned, has inadvertently shifted from being a support system to a source of cognitive and emotional friction. The challenge for the future is not to create more features, but to pivot toward "liveable technology"—innovation that serves us without demanding our constant attention.
The Facts: A Digital Overload Epidemic
The proliferation of health-tracking technology has moved beyond the wrists of fitness enthusiasts into the fabric of daily life. Today, consumers are using smart mattresses, biometric-tracking earrings, and AI-powered diagnostic tools to monitor their health with clinical-grade intensity.
However, this obsession with optimization is clashing with our mental health. According to recent survey data, the average American now spends over five hours a day glued to their smartphone. Perhaps more telling is the psychological sentiment accompanying this usage: over half of all users report a desire to significantly reduce their screen time, with 64% of respondents explicitly stating that a reduction in digital dependency would yield immediate improvements to their physical and mental well-being.
The correlation between excessive screen time and deteriorating mental health is no longer anecdotal. Robust clinical studies have repeatedly linked heavy smartphone and wearable device usage to rising rates of clinical depression, chronic stress, anxiety, and fragmented sleep patterns. Despite this, the industry continues to pump out an ever-expanding array of devices, effectively turning our bodies into data sets that require constant curation.
Chronology: From Medical Necessity to Consumer Obsession
To understand how we reached this point of saturation, we must look at the evolution of health technology over the last two decades.
- 2000s–2010s: The Rise of the Wearable. The early days of health tech were dominated by simple pedometers and heart-rate monitors. These tools were novel and primarily aimed at athletes or those with specific fitness goals.
- 2015–2020: The "Quantified Self" Era. Wearables became smaller, more sophisticated, and mainstream. Companies began moving beyond steps to track sleep architecture, blood oxygen levels, and "readiness scores." The "measure me" movement gained momentum as apps promised to translate raw data into life-changing insights.
- 2020–2023: The Pandemic Pivot. COVID-19 accelerated the adoption of telehealth and remote monitoring. As people felt isolated, they turned to technology to feel a sense of control over their health. During this period, medical-grade technology—such as Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs)—began crossing over into the general consumer market.
- 2024–Present: The AI Explosion. We are now in the age of generative AI, where tools like Claude for Healthcare and predictive algorithms are processing health data in real-time. While promising, this has created a "data deluge," where users are bombarded with notifications, interpretations, and warnings that they are often ill-equipped to process without anxiety.
Supporting Data: The Cost of Constant Monitoring
The data suggests that while we are measuring more, we are not necessarily living better. The "measure me" movement has inadvertently democratized access to medical-grade data, but it has not democratized the medical expertise required to act on it.
A significant point of concern is the "off-label" use of clinical tools. Take, for example, Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs). Furthermore, the "alert fatigue" phenomenon is real. Many users report that their wearables, which were intended to provide peace of mind, now serve as persistent reminders of their health failures. Whether it is a "stand up" alert while one is trying to work, or a "poor sleep" notification upon waking, these devices are adding to the cognitive load of the modern human, rather than reducing it.

Implications: The Need for "Liveable Tech"
If the health tech industry is to continue its upward trajectory, it must reckon with a fundamental design flaw: it has been optimizing for data capture rather than human outcomes.
The Friction Problem
The current design paradigm assumes that more information equals better health. This is a fallacy. For a person managing a chronic condition, the daily burden is already immense. They are required to make hundreds of micro-decisions regarding their health every single day. If the technology intended to help them requires even more interaction—more tapping, more syncing, more interpreting—it has failed in its primary purpose.
Automating the Mundane
The next frontier of innovation must be "liveable technology." This concept rests on a simple, yet radical, principle: technology should fit into our lives, not force our lives to adapt to the technology. This means shifting toward:
- Invisible Data Collection: Sensors that operate in the background without needing a user interface.
- Actionable Intelligence: Surfaces only the data that requires intervention. If a metric is within a normal range, the device should stay silent.
- Frictionless Integration: Systems that talk to each other so the user doesn’t have to act as the "middleman" between their smartwatch and their primary care physician.
A Call for Industry Standardization
The responsibility for this shift lies with the manufacturers, the developers, and the stakeholders of the healthcare industry. As the sector matures, the measure of success should no longer be the number of sensors on a device or the complexity of the dashboard, but the amount of cognitive friction that is removed from the user’s life.
Governments worldwide, including the UK, Australia, and Malaysia, are already taking steps to limit social media exposure for the youth, acknowledging that the digital environment has become toxic to mental health. The health tech industry must be proactive, not reactive. We must set a new industry standard that prioritizes user well-being over engagement metrics.
Meaningful innovation, in healthcare and beyond, is defined by the ability to solve problems without creating new ones. We need to reach a point where managing a chronic condition—or simply maintaining one’s general health—demands less from the person, not more.
The promise of technology is to liberate us, not to shackle us to a dashboard. By embracing "liveable technology," we can ensure that the next generation of health tools acts as a silent, supportive partner in our lives, rather than a demanding, persistent distraction.
