After fourteen years as a fugitive from American justice, Poul Thorsen, MD, PhD, the Danish physician and researcher once at the center of international vaccine safety studies, has officially pleaded guilty to a sweeping wire fraud scheme. The admission brings a definitive close to a saga that saw federal prosecutors spend over a decade tracking a man who allegedly funneled over $1 million in U.S. taxpayer-funded research grants into his personal bank accounts.
The Admission of Guilt
In a federal courtroom this week, Dr. Thorsen formally admitted to operating a sophisticated wire fraud and money laundering scheme targeting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 2004–2008: Thorsen allegedly submitted more than a dozen fraudulent invoices to Aarhus University, bearing the forged signature of a CDC laboratory section chief.
- The Conduit: Based on these falsified documents, the university released funds to credit union accounts that Thorsen represented as official CDC accounts.
- The Extraction: Once the university transferred the money, Thorsen reportedly withdrew the proceeds, using them to finance a lavish personal lifestyle, including the purchase of vehicles and real estate.
The fraud was finally uncovered in 2010 when Aarhus University performed an internal audit and discovered a "considerable shortfall" in the U.S. grant accounts. The university immediately alerted Danish authorities, who in turn coordinated with the CDC and the U.S. Department of Justice. By the time the investigation reached the indictment stage in 2011, Thorsen had fled Denmark, sparking a long-term international manhunt that concluded with his arrest in Germany earlier this year.

He was also involved in a 2003 Pediatrics study regarding thimerosal.
Following the 2011 indictment, conspiracy theorists and anti-vaccine advocates frequently cited Thorsen’s legal troubles to cast doubt on the validity of the underlying data. "Poul Thorsen did not have access to the data in the NEJM study and he did not play any part in the study design or statistical analyses," noted Anders Hviid, MSc, DrMedSci, of the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, during Thorsen’s arraignment earlier this year. "The data sources used in the NEJM study are nationwide administrative registers."
Dr. Paul Offit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, a leading expert on vaccine safety, reinforced this sentiment. "Thorsen was one of many authors," Offit noted. "His legal problems don’t change the data in that study. The science stands on its own, regardless of the personal financial failings of one contributor."
